En international konference om kunstens og musikkens sprog: “Culture as an Emotion: Using Art to Express and Create Social Awareness” holdes i Berlin i februar 2012 - parallelt med Berlins internationale filmfestival.
The conference on the topic of “Culture as an Emotion” is the second conference held by the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy on the topic of ‘Art’ as a tool for Cultural Diplomacy.
The aim of the conference this year is to reflect on the role of art in creating social awareness and a sense of identity and how this can affect key international issues.
Looking at the various forms art can take and how art and how it is used has developed, this conference will look at how art can be used as Cultural Diplomacy initiatives. The program will consist of lectures, seminars, debates and panel discussions that will feature leading figures from international politics & diplomacy, academia, civil society, and the private sector.
As the international system has developed over the centuries so has individual expression and art has become a significant medium to voice opinion and facilitate change. Used as a way to reflect the values of society, as a way of voicing concern and as a form of protest, art is becoming increasingly significant as a tool for Cultural Diplomacy. This growing use of art is becoming increasingly important within international relations and The Institute for Cultural Diplomacy reflects the desire to expand on this work.
Conference Participants
The conference is open to applications from governmental and diplomatic officials, civil society practitioners, young professionals, students and scholars, private sector representatives, journalists, and other interested stakeholders from across the world.
Conference Agenda
In an increasingly globalised international society, the focus on community, local, national and international issues becomes ever more important. With such global expansion, it is important to recognise social identities and create a strong foundation on which the world can grow from as individuals and societies as a whole.
One way in which we can do this is through the Arts. Indeed, art, music, dance, film and other forms of artistic expression are significant tools to express emotion, desire, needs and frustrations. Art, with the ability to involve and express every social aspect, is all-inclusive and as such is the perfect medium for Cultural Diplomacy and the creation of social awareness.
The conference will explore this aspect of art and culture and explore the opportunities for Cultural Diplomacy initiatives in the 21st century.
Anthropological Expression: How the Arts tell our History
In our globalised interdependent world, cultural sensitivity is a necessary requirement of success. In the shifting political and economic landscape it is important to look at our cultural history in order to compass us today. Art offers us this very opportunity with its evolution over time reflecting the significant shifts in politics, society and the international society. During the conference we aim to discover how cultural diplomacy can be assisted by art.
