Sverige: Trans Europe Halles international meeting no 74

The next international meeting of Trans Europe Halles in Göteborg will focus on independent culture and its impact on politics and society.

CAN INDEPENDENT CULTURE HAVE AN IMPACT ON POLITICS AND SOCIETY?
TEAM CULTURE 2012 SAYS: YES!

Trans Europe Halles is “one of the most active cultural networks [of independant cultural centers] (...) where all kinds of people are literally producing what we have been dreaming about and talking about for a decade”. That is how Moukhtar Kocache, art historian and curator, introduced the network Trans Europe Halles with a membership of over 70 independent cultural centers across Europe, during the Team Culture Event in Brussels. This Team was set up by Uffe Elbaek, Danish Minister of Culture, to find examples of artistic and cultural projects that can make a difference in a titime of crisis. On the 6th of June 2012, the Team talked in front of several members of the European Parliament, and European Ministers of Culture, including Eleni Mavrou, deputy Minister of Culture in Cyprus, which is going to preside the European Commission during the last semester of 2012.

Moukhtar Kocache’s choice was Trans Europe Halles and we are of course proud to be described as a “vivid example of trans national exchanges, intercultural connectivity and European integration”. This choice is significant: it designates Trans Europe Halles as a credible spokesperson for the whole independent cultural sector at the exact moment where a new cultural program is being discussed in the European Union. It gives us a voice that has to be heard.

It is urgent now to involve all citizens in the building of our future societies. In Trans Europe Halles, we truly believe that art and culture have a part to play in this process, and that we need more than ever to bring tangible support to these spaces which work each day to put art in the middle of our every day life.

The next international meeting of Trans Europe Halles will focus on independent culture and its impact on politics and society. Join us in September 27-30th in Gothenburg (Sweden) hosted by our members Röda Sten and Konstepidemin.

----------

What is the potential of arts and culture in a time of crisis? Moukthar Kocache being one of 12 members of Team Culture 2012 commissioned by the Danish Presidency to discuss and give concrete examples of this, chose to present TEH and its members as his example: Today Im honoured to have the opportunity to speak to you about a topic that I have been passionate about for quite some time, namely independent cultural spaces that over the last few decades have been initiated and established by citizens in abandoned industrial spaces all across Europe.

Moukthar Kocache, art historian and curator, made his speech presenting TEH in front of the cultural ministers from Denmark, Norway, Lithuania, Latvia, Croatia and Cyprus, members of EU Parliament, the cultural committee and several other stakeholders. He ended his speech by calling on all politicians to support independent cultural centres: Independent cultural centres all across Europe with strong roots in their communities are thriving with artistic, civic, political and social innovation. The time has come to acknowledge that these communities are sources of creativity, inspiration and citizenry. The time has come, to learn from them and to make a commitment to support them.
